Fuel calculator: trip cost, MPG and fuel needed
Work out a journey's fuel cost, how far a tank will take you, your MPG or the fuel you need. The result updates as you type.
Better in the Fuelio app for iPhone and Android
The calculator is a free feature in the app.
- Trip cost, distance, consumption and fuel needed
- Fuel price from your last fill-up or your average
- Consumption from your last fill-up or your average
- Each car's own units, and a tank switch for bi-fuel cars
Available onAndroidiOS
Convert miles to km and MPG to l/100 km
Type a number in any box and the others update.
The iPhone and Android apps do it better
This page is a quick version to try. The calculator in the Fuelio app for iPhone and Android is a free feature, and it starts from your own driving instead of numbers you type. Pick what you want to work out (trip cost, distance, consumption or fuel needed) and most of the fields are already filled in.
- Your real fuel price. The price comes from your last fill-up, or from your average price if you prefer.
- Your real consumption. Fuel economy comes from your fuel log (the mileage log): your last result or your long-term average.
- Your car's units. The calculator uses the car you have selected, in the units you set up for it.
- Bi-fuel cars. On a car with two tanks, such as petrol and LPG, pick the tank and the price and consumption switch to that fuel.
You can still type over any value, for example to see what a trip would cost at a cheaper station.
How the numbers are worked out
The calculator turns everything into kilometres, litres and litres per 100 km, does the sum, then turns the result back into the units you picked.
- Trip cost = distance × consumption × price. With miles and MPG: miles ÷ MPG × price per gallon. Step by step: how to calculate the fuel cost of a trip.
- Fuel economy = litres used ÷ kilometres × 100 for l/100 km, or miles ÷ gallons for MPG. See how to calculate MPG, how to calculate l/100 km and mileage in km per litre.
- Distance = fuel × MPG, or litres ÷ l/100 km × 100.
- Fuel needed = distance ÷ MPG, or kilometres × l/100 km ÷ 100.
UK and US gallons are different sizes. A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon is 3.785 litres, so 40 mpg in the UK is about 33 mpg in the US. That is why the calculator asks which gallon you use.
