Data, backups & privacy

How do I back up, restore or import my data?

Your logs are stored on your phone. Fuelio has no account and we don't keep your data on our servers, so a backup is the only way to get your history back if you lose, reset or replace your phone.

Android

Backing up on Android

You have three ways to back up. Google Drive or Dropbox is automatic. A ZIP file is a copy you keep yourself.

Google Drive or Dropbox

  1. Open the Dropbox or Google Drive section of Settings and link your account.
  2. Switch on Auto-backup. Fuelio now saves your data whenever you add or edit a fill-up.

On a new phone: link the same account and download your data. Downloading replaces the data on that phone.

Privacy: Fuelio can only see its own files. On Google Drive it can read and write only files it created, and on Dropbox it uses its own app folder. Your backup is in Android/Fuelio on Google Drive (look for the backup-csv subfolder) or in Apps/Fuelio on Dropbox.

Full backup (ZIP file)

  1. Go to Settings → Backup (Import/Export options) and choose Full backup.
  2. Choose whether to include your photos and the extra Trip Log files (GPX files and map views), then save.

Fuelio puts all your information in one ZIP file. Keep it wherever you like: on your computer, in cloud storage or in an email to yourself.

To restore: choose Restore full backup in the same menu and pick the file. Restoring replaces your current data.

Spreadsheet (CSV)

Export CSV and Import CSV in the same menu save and read your logs as a CSV file you can open in Excel or LibreOffice. Use it to move data between apps or to edit it by hand.

iOS

Backing up on iPhone

You have two separate options. iCloud Sync keeps your devices in step. iCloud Drive backup is a set of files that you send and download yourself.

iCloud Sync (run by Apple)

Switch on iCloud Sync in Fuelio's settings. Your vehicles, fill-ups and costs are then kept in your own iCloud account.

  • Apple does the syncing. Every iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple ID gets the same data, and Fuelio shows "Syncing across devices".
  • You need to be signed in to iCloud.
  • Apple decides when a sync runs, so a change can take a little while to appear on your other devices.
  • If you switch sync off, the data stays on the device.

Export a backup before you switch it on (the app suggests this). If you use Fuelio on more than one device, some entries may appear twice after the first sync. You can delete the duplicates.

iCloud Drive backup (files you control)

This is separate from iCloud Sync. Open iCloud Drive Backup and use:

  • Send to iCloud to save your data and photos as files in the Fuelio folder in iCloud Drive.
  • Download from iCloud to bring them back. This replaces everything in the app and cannot be undone.
  • Automatic backup to do it for you, and Sync photos for your pictures.
  • Import / export to move a single vehicle.

Importing from other apps

Before importing data manually, try the Fuelio Converter, an open-source project made by our users that converts files from similar apps to the Fuelio format.

Importing from paper or Excel notes

Fuelio uses the CSV format, and it is easy to create a CSV file in LibreOffice or Excel. Download the sample file, open it and add your data.

Tip: the most common mistake is a wrong date format. Make sure the date format in the template header at the top of the file matches the dates in your entries. If your file still doesn't import, email us. It's often a quick look to find the error.

I lost my phone and didn't turn on backups. Can you restore my data?

No, sorry. We don't store users' data on our servers, so there is nothing we could restore. See our Privacy Policy.
